The Birchard Public Library now stands on the site of Fort Stephenson which is where the "Battle of Fort Stephenson" took place during the War of 1812 commanded by Colonel George Croghan. The U.S. felt that Britain was interfering with their trade and supporting hostile Indians on the frontier. At that time, Ohio was part of the frontier.
When Britain lost the attack on Fort Stephenson, the British retreated. They were then defeated in the Battle of Lake Erie and later battles. The battle of Fort Stephenson was the last western battle fought in U.S. territory. Major Croghan, the commander of Fort Stephenson, was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel after his victory over the British forces. Croghan Street is named in his honor.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Center Library was opened in 1916 and is the first actual Presidential Library and the one of only three for a presidency of the 19th century.
It is now known as the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center and includes the Hayes home named Spiegel Grove, residence to several generations, the Museum and the Library.
Spiegel Grove, is an historic site that was the estate of Civil War general and nineteenth President of the United States Rutherford B Hayes. Spiegel is the German word for mirror. The traditional story is that the estate was named by Sardis Birchard, an uncle of Rutherford B. Hayes, for the reflective pools of water that collected on the property after a rain shower.
The library holds the 12,000 volume personal library of Rutherford B. Hayes as well as materials of his military and political career, particularly of his presidency 1877-81. The library contains by now 70,000 volumes plus newspapers and journals from the time of the Civil War to the eve of World War I.
The library was expanded in 1922 and in 1968. The Center is supported by the private foundations; Ohio Historical Society and Hayes Presidential Center Inc.
