In 1824, DeWitt Clinton, a famous New York statesman, proposed the building of a canal from the mouth of the Portage River in Sandusky County, Ohio, to the Ohio River at Cincinnati.

1,212 acres in Sandusky County were bought for the site of the project from Horton Howard by General William Lytle of Cincinnati, who then later sold the land to Ezekiel Haines.

DeWitt, who was known as “the Father of the Erie Canal” died just 4 months before the platting of the town was completed.  The platting of the town included space for parks and lots for a courthouse, hotel, bank, churches, and council chambers.  In 1828 the platting was completed and the town was established.  It was named Port Clinton by Ezekiel Haines in honor of DeWitt Clinton.

The canal project failed however and a survey conducted discovered that what would have been called the Sandusky-Scioto Canal, was not a feasible proposition because of an insufficient water supply.

Port Clinton/ Catawba Businesses
The Catawba township is located in the northeastern part of the county on the northern point of the Marblehead Peninsula, forming its own peninsula — not an island — into Lake Erie.

The naming of Catawba is not documented. One source claims that it is named for the Catawba tribe, who once lived in the Carolinas.  The meaning of the name "Catawba" is unclear. It may be derived from the Choctaw katapa, meaning "separated" or "divided." Other scholars have traced it to a Catawba word meaning "people on the edge (or bank) of a river," or "people of the fork." The Catawba called themselves "Nieye" (people), or "Ye iswa'here" (people of the river).
Sandy beaches, beautiful parks, the best walleye fishing, exciting water parks and quaint shopping are just some of the reasons that Port Clinton is a wonderful place to live and visit.  It also offers waterfront dining, lakefront events and family fun.

Port Clinton is also home to the Jet Express dock which will take you on a ferry boat ride to the island of Put-in-Bay for the day.  And it is only 20 minutes from Sandusky where you can spend the day being thrilled on the best roller coasters in the World at Cedar Point.

Port Clinton is at the heart of everything that Lake Erie has to offer.

Miles of beautiful shorelines, great fishing, nature reserves and state parks make Catawba Island a summertime paradise for many in Ohio's North Coast region and beyond.   Take the day and visit the Cedar Meadow  Preserve, a 62 acre preserve of mixed meadows, forests and wetlands or spend time going through all of the unique shops downtown.
